Mistress Update: Early March 2014- Our First Wrecking Trip Of The Year

What a day we had yesterday on the wrecks out of Whitby, its the first day we have had a crack at them this year as we have been waiting for the conditions to fall into place.

We steamed just over an hour to our first wreck, its a wreck I’ve been wanting to get on for a while, my choice payed off for us as we enjoyed some brilliant sport on shads and bait on the last of the ebb tide with everybody taking plenty of fish.

Ash from York with a nice cod on a Sidewinder

The tide eased as we approached slack water and the fishing slowed down, we picked away steadily and carried on into the flood tide which wasn’t pushing very hard.
As it approached 2pm we started making tracks towards home, stopping at a couple of wrecks on the way and taking more fish for the lads.

We finished up with between 90 and 100 fish today for the lads, the best angler taking 23.

Jason from York with one on a red head shad

The best lures were the Sidewinder 4″ Sandeel in Rhubard & Custard and also a new lure we saw onboard that fished really well was the Eddystone Eel 2012 – 170mm ,25g  in  ” Rhubarb & Custard . All these lures are available from Whitby Angling Supplies.

Paul from Southport with a fine brace of cod

I finally got to use my 12-20lb class Diawa Kenzaki Braid Special rod and it performed brilliantly.
Anyone looking for a lightweight rod that gives you maximum sport on the shads and will handle pretty much everything thrown at it, this is the rod for you!
Again Martin at Whitby Angling Supplies stocks these- and at a very competitive price too.
Prospects for Spring are nothing short of excellent.
