The Boat & Skipper

Skipper

I started out boat angling in Whitby when I was just 7 years old. I fished regularly with skippers such as the lateTut Uttley on North Star, Mick Norden on Tina Dawn and Paul Kilpatrick on Ceedan (now has Sea Otter 2).

I realised early on that I wanted to run my own charter boat.

My father and me started out with a 21ft boat called Sea Spray which my father bought when I was 15.

We had this boat for around 7 years, and learned a lot, regularly landing good catches.

I started working and eventually went to sea and became a Marine Engineer with BP on the tankers. During this time, I completed all the relevant safety courses required.

I also managed on my leave to complete my Yacht Master Offshore qualification, which gave me all the qualifications I required to become a skipper.

Once I qualified my father and me bought the hull for fitting out which later became Growler.

With the speed this boat gave us it allowed us to explore more grounds, quicker, giving us access to even more fishing hot spots.

I became busy with Growler and realised that I would need a bigger boat, and so bought the Mistress, my father saw it as a good time to retire from skippering, he is still a keen angler though and fishes with me regularly.

I have always been a keen angler and I’m keener now than I ever have been! With over 15 years of local knowledge and experience of the wrecks, reefs and fishing grounds here at Whitby.

I am 100% committed to my charters and Alambre vaper Coils give 110% effort every time. I’m friendly & patient and always at hand to give guidance, assistance and advice

When I’m not skippering or boat angling I can often be found fishing the shore marks in summer for bass or in winter for cod, you could say fishing is a bit of an obsession with me!

The Boat
M
istress is a Fast Offshore 105 powered by a large Sabre Turbo Diesel engine. Giving her a top speed of nearly 20 knots, meaning she will cruise comfortably at around 12 knots. Therefore we can get to all those fishing marks inshore fast or push offshore if we really need to.

Following a very successful fishing season last year I made the decision to upgrade to a larger vessel. I was very impressed with how my old boat, `Growler’ handled so opted to upgrade to a larger Offshore.

Offshore 105’s have a great reputation for being the perfect angling platform, having a huge working deck and being extremely stable whilst underway and fishing at anchor or fishing on the drift.

Mistress is licensed to carry 12 passengers and 2 crew , allowing us to operate within 60 miles of Whitby.

There is plenty space onboard Mistress and ample seating is provided for our anglers’ comfort whilst cruising. There is a large bait & filleting station fitted which will also hold up to 12 fishing rods. This gives the advantage of a clear, tidy, uncluttered deck and means there is less risk of damaging your valuable fishing equipment.

Mistress has been fitted with the latest navigation equipment. She has a fully integrated Raymarine navigation network system. Giving pin-point accuracy when locating wrecks or prominent fish holding features on the many reefs we fish here at Whitby. Also new to the Mistress is a fitted galley unit with microwave.

Mistress is also fitted with a flushing sea toilet in an enclosed space for ladies and those emergencies at sea.
